Chapter 10 - The Sunlit Horizon

The winter snow had melted away, giving way to the brilliant, vibrant blossoming of an upstate New York spring. The sprawling lawns of the Moretti estate were a lush, vibrant green, dotted with blooming tulips and surrounded by towering oaks swaying gently in the warm May breeze.
Inside the grand ballroom where a nightmare had begun months ago, life had returned in full, radiant force—only this time, the atmosphere was defined by pure, unadulterated joy.
It was Ruby Moretti’s seventh birthday.
There were no crystal chandeliers trembling with tension, no hidden cameras tracking secret betrayals, and no malicious interlopers hiding behind sweet smiles. Every guest in attendance—handpicked families, loyal executives, and lifelong friends—smiled warmly as they watched the center of the room.
Ruby stood right in the middle of the polished marble floor.
She wore a bright, sun-yellow summer dress, ribbons dancing in her hair. Her right leg moved freely, smoothly, and effortlessly as she danced in a joyous circle with her favorite cousins, her laughter ringing out like silver bells through the vaulted ceiling.
Dr. Evans stood near the refreshment table, sipping sparkling cider and chatting with Marcus Vance, both of them watching the little girl with deep satisfaction.
"She’s fully recovered," Dr. Evans remarked, shaking his head in amazement. "Not a single lingering limp, not a trace of structural weakness. Children truly are remarkably resilient—when they are surrounded by the right protection."
Marcus nodded slowly, glancing across the room toward Salvatore.
Salvatore Moretti stood near the French doors leading out to the rose garden. He wore a crisp linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, a relaxed, easy smile resting upon his face. The dark, brooding tycoon who terrified Wall Street had melted away completely, replaced entirely by a father whose whole world was anchored to the little girl spinning across the marble floor.
As the music swelled to a gentle, joyful crescendo, Ruby broke away from her cousins and came running across the room straight toward her father.
She didn't limp. She didn't stumble. She ran with the light, unbridled speed of a child who knew she was completely, unconditionally safe.
Salvatore dropped down immediately to one knee, throwing his arms open wide just as Ruby crashed happily into his chest, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
"Happy birthday, my princess," Salvatore whispered, pressing a long, tender kiss to the top of her head as he lifted her effortlessly off the floor.
Ruby smiled brightly, her hazel eyes shining with absolute happiness as she looked down at him. "Thank you, Daddy. This is the best birthday ever."
Salvatore stood up, holding her securely against his heart, and looked out through the open French doors toward the endless expanse of their sunlit estate, knowing that no shadow would ever touch them again.

"It’s going to be like this forever, sweetheart," Salvatore promised softly. "I'm right here. I'm never leaving."
And as the afternoon sun bathed the Moretti family in a golden, everlasting light, the story of their unbreakable bond stood complete, safe, and eternal.
