Chapter 16 - The Shadowy Benefactor

Deep within the subterranean infrastructure of a brutalist concrete data center in downtown Manhattan, a solitary figure sat in the glow of dual monitors, watching lines of green data stream across the screen with mounting triumph.

The anonymous hacker—known in the darknet underground only as "The Architect"—watched the progress bar tick past ninety-eight percent. *Master keys acquired,* the terminal flashed in crisp white letters.

Before the hacker could execute the final script to erase their digital footprint, the heavy steel security door at the end of the server aisle exploded inward with a deafening crash. Heavy combat boots hit the concrete floor in a synchronized rhythm.

"Federal agents! Do not move!" shouted a voice through a tactical megaphone, followed immediately by the blinding sweep of tactical flashlights cutting through the dim aisles.

The hacker panicked, fingers flying across the keys to initiate a self-destruct wipe protocol. But a heavy tactical boot slammed down onto the keyboard, snapping the plastic keys and shattering the terminal screen into a spiderweb of glass.

A large, leather-gloved hand gripped the collar of the hacker’s hoodie, violently hauling them out of the ergonomic chair and slamming them against the cold concrete server rack.

Salvatore Moretti stepped out from behind the tactical team, his face obscured by shadow, his presence radiating an overwhelming, suffocating aura of lethal authority.

"Who hired you?" Salvatore’s voice was a low, terrifying whisper that cut straight to the bone.

The hacker, gasping for breath, looked up into Salvatore’s dark, unblinking eyes and realized right then that all the money in the world couldn't buy protection from the man standing before them. "I... I don't know his name! Just a wire transfer from a Swiss bank! Handle... handle name... *The Phantom*!"

Salvatore slowly released his grip, stepping back as security operatives slapped heavy steel cuffs onto the hacker's wrists. He pulled out his phone, dialed a direct, highly classified number, and spoke into the receiver without breaking eye contact with the trembling captive.

"Marcus. Track every transaction originating from the Swiss account tied to 'The Phantom.' And ready my private jet. We’re going to Geneva."
