Chapter 4 - The Sub-Level Confession

Sub-level holding suite B was not a dungeon, but it possessed all the psychological terror of one. Located three floors beneath the grand ballroom, insulated by four feet of reinforced concrete and soundproofed to military standards, the room was stark, sterile, and lit by a harsh, single overhead LED panel.
There were no windows. There was no furniture except for a single metal table and two chairs bolted firmly to the floor.
Lucinda Bellini sat in one of the chairs, her designer emerald dress wrinkled and stained with spilled champagne, her hair coming unpinned and falling in wild strands across her face. The immaculate society queen was gone; in her place sat a cornered, terrified animal realizing for the first time that her game had ended in total ruin.
When the heavy steel door buzzed, unlocked, and swung open, Lucinda flinched violently.
Salvatore Moretti walked in. He didn't rush. He moved with the slow, terrifying gravity of an executioner entering the chamber. Marcus followed closely behind him, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and a high-definition tactical tablet.
Salvatore pulled out the opposite chair, sat down smoothly, and rested his elbows on the metal table, locking his obsidian eyes directly onto Lucinda’s trembling face.
"Salvatore—please," Lucinda whispered, her voice cracking, the arrogance completely stripped away, replaced by raw, primal terror. "You don't understand. I was under pressure. My investments... I made some bad choices in the market, and—"
"Quiet, Lucinda," Salvatore said. His voice was soft, almost conversational, which made it ten times more terrifying than a roar.
He gestured to Marcus, who tossed the leather briefcase onto the table with a heavy thud. Marcus opened it and slid a thick stack of printed financial records, corporate filings, and bank transfers across the metal surface until they rested right in front of Lucinda’s shaking hands.
"Fourteen months," Salvatore said smoothly. "Four million dollars siphoned from the Moretti Children’s Medical Fund. Funneled through Panamanian shell companies directly into the accounts of Vanguard Holdings LLC—controlled by Victor Vance."
Lucinda’s face drained of every remaining trace of color until she looked like a corpse under the harsh LED light. Her lips trembled silently.
"You didn't just target my daughter out of petty jealousy," Salvatore continued, leaning forward slightly, resting his chin on his interlocked fingers. "You were planted in my life by Victor Vance. Your entire history—the mutual friends, the charity events, the way you maneuvered your way into my home—it was all a corporate intelligence operation."
"No... no, Salvatore, that’s not true!" Lucinda sobbed, lunging forward to grab the edge of the table, her fingernails scratching desperately against the metal. "Victor threatened me! He had leverage over my family’s estate in Milan! He said if I didn't get close to you, if I didn't feed him inside information on your shipping schedules and tender bids, he would ruin my brother and expose our family to bankruptcy! I had no choice!"
Salvatore didn't flinch. He didn't offer a shred of sympathy.
"Everyone has a choice, Lucinda," Salvatore said coldly. "You chose luxury. You chose betrayal. And most unforgivably of all... you chose to lay your hands on my six-year-old daughter. You chose to terrorize a little girl who was healing from a broken bone, simply because her existence inconvenienced your assignment."
"I never hurt her!" Lucinda screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks, ruining her makeup entirely. "I just took her brace off! It wasn't physical abuse, Salvatore! It was tough love, just like I said! She’s exaggerating!"
Marcus tapped the tactical tablet on the table and pressed play.
The high-definition video of yesterday afternoon in the east wing study began to play on the screen. The audio filled the sterile room with brutal clarity: Lucinda’s harsh, venomous voice threatening the little girl, the sound of the brace being ripped away, Ruby’s terrified cry, and the explicit threat: “If you cry or tell your father, I’ll make sure he stops believing every single word that comes out of your mouth.”
Lucinda stared at the screen as if looking at a ghost. Her breath hitched, and she slumped backward into her chair, utterly defeated. The digital evidence was irrefutable, permanent, and absolute.
"There is no court in this country, Lucinda, and no high-priced defense attorney in Manhattan who can save you from what comes next," Salvatore said, standing up slowly from his chair.
"What... what are you going to do to me?" Lucinda whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead light. "Are you going to kill me?"
Salvatore looked down at her with an expression of profound, chilling detachment.
"Kill you? No, Lucinda. Murder is for amateurs, and I am a businessman," Salvatore said calmly. "Instead, every single asset you own, every bank account, every piece of jewelry, every designer dress, and every trust fund associated with your name is frozen as of thirty minutes ago under federal fraud statutes."
He buttoned his suit jacket.
"Furthermore, Marcus has already transmitted the complete financial dossier and the video evidence to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Grand jury indictments for wire fraud, corporate espionage, extortion, and child endangerment will be filed before sunrise."
Lucinda covered her face with her hands, letting out a long, broken wail of absolute despair. "You’re destroying me... you’re destroying my entire life..."
May you like
"You destroyed your own life the moment you walked into my daughter’s room," Salvatore said, turning toward the steel door. He paused with his hand on the handle, looking back over his shoulder one last time. "And trust me, Lucinda... compared to what Victor Vance is about to experience for trying to infiltrate my family, prison will feel like a vacation."
The heavy steel door swung shut, the electronic lock clicked into place with a definitive thunk, and Lucinda Bellini was left alone in the dark.
