Chapter 5 - The Ripple Effect

By dawn, the shockwaves of the Moretti estate incident had already begun to shatter the upper echelons of New York’s financial and social elite.
The private holding cells beneath the Moretti compound were no longer holding Lucinda; she had been transferred directly into federal custody via a discreet black SUV convoy before sunrise, bypassing local precinct paperwork entirely through the weight of Salvatore’s direct judicial contacts. By 8:00 AM, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and every major financial blog simultaneously published breaking-news investigative reports detailing the multi-million-dollar fraud scheme involving Vanguard Holdings, the Moretti Children’s Medical Fund, and the federal indictment of Lucinda Bellini.
Victor Vance’s corporate empire did not merely stumble; it suffered a catastrophic liquidity crisis. Within four hours of the federal indictment hitting the newswires, institutional investors pulled over two billion dollars from Vance’s shipping conglomerate. Stock prices plummeted by forty-eight percent before trading was temporarily halted by the SEC.
Upstairs in the private family wing of the Moretti mansion, however, the world was quiet, warm, and bathed in the soft golden light of an autumn Sunday morning.
Ruby Moretti woke up slowly.
For the first time in six weeks, there were no nightmares of falling, no phantom pain echoing from her healing tibia, and no lingering shadow of fear in the corners of her bedroom. Her leg rested comfortably in the new, lightweight pneumatic brace, supported by soft orthopedic pillows.
She blinked sleepily, her hazel eyes focusing on the oversized leather armchair positioned right beside her bed.
Salvatore Moretti was sitting there.
He hadn't slept. His suit jacket was draped over the back of the chair, his silk tie was loosened, and the faint morning stubble darkened his jaw. But his eyes—those dark, formidable eyes that terrified billionaires and broke corporate syndicates—were filled with an infinite, tender warmth as he watched his daughter open her eyes.
"Good morning, princess," Salvatore said softly, leaning forward and resting his large, warm hand gently over her small fingers.
Ruby smiled, a bright, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the first time in months. "Good morning, Daddy."
"How is the leg feeling today?" he asked, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand.
"It doesn't hurt at all," Ruby said honestly, stretching her toes inside the soft cotton sheets. "And... and I don't feel scared anymore."
Salvatore’s chest tightened with a surge of fierce, protective emotion. He leaned down and pressed a long, gentle kiss to her forehead.
"You never have to be scared again, Ruby. I promised you yesterday, and I mean it forever. Nobody will ever hurt you, nobody will ever take your brace off without permission, and nobody will ever make you feel like your voice doesn't matter."
Ruby wrapped her small arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder. "Are you going to stay here with me today, Daddy?"
"I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart," Salvatore murmured, holding her close. "Today, tomorrow, and every day after that. It's just you and me."
Downstairs, Marcus Vance stood quietly outside the open bedroom door, holding a secure cryptographic tablet. He waited respectfully until Salvatore looked up and nodded permission to speak.
"Boss," Marcus reported in a low, controlled voice. "Federal marshals just executed a search warrant on Victor Vance’s midtown penthouse. His corporate accounts have been frozen, and his board of directors has called an emergency vote to oust him as CEO by noon."
Salvatore didn't break his embrace with Ruby, but his eyes flickered with cold satisfaction.
"Tell the legal team to ensure he gets the maximum statutory sentence," Salvatore replied quietly. "And make sure every asset recovered from his shell companies is automatically transferred into an endowment fund for pediatric orthopedic research—administered directly in Ruby’s name."

"Consider it done, sir," Marcus said, nodding once before stepping back down the corridor, leaving father and daughter in absolute peace.
The sun climbed higher into the crisp autumn sky, bathing the majestic Westchester estate in brilliant, unobstructed light. The storm had passed, the shadows had been utterly purged, and the Moretti empire stood stronger, safer, and more unified than ever before.
