Chapter 14 - The Convergence at the Harbor

The midnight fog rolled heavily off the East River, casting ghostly, swirling shadows across the abandoned industrial docks of Brooklyn. The rusted skeletal remains of old shipping cranes stood like ancient sentinels against the dim amber glow of distant city lights.

A sleek, black Maybach glided silently down the cracked asphalt of Pier 42, its high beams cutting through the heavy mist. The car came to a smooth halt near the edge of the water.

The rear door opened, and Salvatore Moretti stepped out, adjusting the collar of his heavy charcoal overcoat against the biting autumn chill. Behind him, two imposing security operatives stepped out of the front doors, scanning the perimeter with practiced vigilance.

A few yards away, leaning against the damp hood of a battered sedan, stood a figure wrapped in a dark trench coat. As Salvatore approached, the figure pushed off the car, revealing the sharp, lined face of Julian Vance, Marcus’s estranged older brother and a high-ranking intelligence consultant who operated in the murky underworld between corporate espionage and federal oversight.

"You’re playing a dangerous game, Salvatore," Julian said without preamble, his breath pluming in the cold air. "Crushing Lucinda legally is one thing. But liquidating the Sterling trust through back-channel proxies? That’s inviting a very different kind of counter-attack."

Salvatore stopped a few feet away, his expression carved from granite. "The Sterlings are finished, Julian. Their name is dirt in every financial hub from London to Tokyo. They brought this on themselves the moment they allowed that woman to weaponize her privilege against a defenseless child."

"It’s not just about the Sterlings anymore," Julian warned, pulling a slim encrypted flash drive from his pocket and tossing it through the air. Salvatore caught it effortlessly with one hand. "While you were busy dismantling Lucinda’s domestic network, my contacts in Zurich flagged a massive, unauthorized data transfer originating from a server farm in Zurich. Someone with deep pockets and an active grudge against Moretti Global is trying to breach your proprietary algorithmic vault."

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed, the dark intensity in his gaze sharpening. "Who?"

"That’s the million-dollar question," Julian replied, pulling his coat tighter. "It’s not Lucinda. She’s too incompetent for this level of cyber-warfare. This is corporate espionage on a geopolitical scale. Someone wants your entire empire—and they’re using your obsession with protecting Ruby as a distraction."
