Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Horizon

The transition from autumn to early winter in Westchester brought a stark, beautiful majesty to the Moretti estate. The sprawling lawns were dusted with the first delicate hints of morning frost, and the grand fireplaces inside the mansion burned bright from dawn until late into the night.

Inside his private second-floor study, Salvatore Moretti sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing international logistics reports and quarterly shipping audits. The corporate fallout from Victor Vance’s downfall had been swift and devastating to Vance’s former syndicate; three major European shipping lanes had folded entirely, leaving Salvatore’s empire with a virtual monopoly over transatlantic maritime freight.

Yet, despite the staggering financial triumph, a subtle undercurrent of tension lingered in the air.

Marcus Vance knocked quietly twice before pushing the heavy oak door open and stepping into the study. His expression was tight, his posture rigid in a way that immediately caught Salvatore’s attention.

Salvatore set his fountain pen down on the blotter. "Report, Marcus."

Marcus walked over to the desk, placing a thick manila folder and a decrypted storage drive beside the paperwork. "We’ve been monitoring the communications traffic originating from the federal holding facility where Lucinda Bellini is currently being held pending trial."

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed slightly. "I thought her communications were completely restricted under federal security protocols."

"They are," Marcus confirmed grimly. "Officially, she has zero access to external lines, attorneys, or visitors outside of her court-appointed defense counsel. However... our internal network monitoring picked up a brief, highly encrypted burst transmission originating from a burner frequency routed through a proxy server in Zurich just before midnight last night."

Salvatore stood up slowly, walking around to the front of the desk. "Who was the recipient?"

"Not a recipient, boss—an originator," Marcus corrected, tapping the manila folder. "The encrypted transmission wasn't going out. It was coming in. Someone managed to smuggle a micro-comm device into the federal facility, and Lucinda made a thirty-second voice call to an unlisted satellite number registered in Geneva."

"Geneva," Salvatore repeated, the word tasting like ash. "Victor Vance’s primary offshore holdings were anchored in Geneva."

"Precisely," Marcus said. "Vance’s inner circle—his primary legal counsel and a syndicate of silent partners who funded his hostile takeover attempts—didn't go down when he was arrested. They’ve been regrouping under a new corporate umbrella called Meridian Global Capital. And according to the audio intercept we managed to partially decode, they aren't done trying to break you."

Salvatore walked over to the tall arched window overlooking the gated perimeter of the estate. Outside, the morning security patrols were moving with quiet, tactical precision. The perimeter sensors were active; every camera, laser tripwire, and motion detector was calibrated to maximum sensitivity.

"What did Lucinda say on the recording?" Salvatore asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Marcus played a short audio file from his tactical tablet.

Through the small speaker, Lucinda Bellini’s voice crackled, desperate, bitter, and filled with venom: “...he thinks he’s won, but he doesn't know everything. The foundation audits missed the secondary trust accounts in the Caymans. If you want Moretti to bleed, hit him where the legal system can't touch him. Hit the girl's trust. Or better yet... remind him that walls don't keep everyone out.”

The audio cut off with a burst of static.

Salvatore didn't flinch. His jaw tightened until the bone showed sharp and white against his skin, but his voice remained terrifyingly calm.

"They think playing dirty games in the corporate shadows gives them leverage," Salvatore murmured, turning away from the window. "They don't understand that when someone threatens my family, the corporate world is just a warmup."

"The security detail has been doubled across all residential checkpoints," Marcus reported instantly. "Every staff member, driver, and vendor is undergoing a secondary background vetting as of this morning. Ruby is completely protected."

"Make sure she is," Salvatore said, picking up his suit jacket from the chair. "I’m going upstairs to check on her. Keep tracing that Geneva ping until you find the exact physical address of the sender. When I finish breakfast with my daughter, we are going to pay a very permanent visit to whoever thinks they can threaten my home."
