Chapter 12 - The Whispers in the Boardroom

Three days later, high above the glittering skyline of Manhattan, the forty-fifth-floor boardroom of Moretti Global Enterprises hummed with high-stakes tension. Polished mahogany tables reflected the steel-grey clouds gathering outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, mirroring the atmosphere inside the room.
Salvatore sat at the head of the long table, flanked by Marcus Vance and a battery of forensic accountants. Across from them sat a row of corporate directors whose pale faces and trembling hands betrayed their panic.
"Mr. Moretti," stammered Harrison Cole, the senior vice president of international acquisitions, dabbing sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. "We assure you, the board had no direct knowledge of Lucinda’s covert attempts to liquidate subsidiary assets prior to her arrest. She operated through a labyrinth of shell companies."
Salvatore didn't speak immediately. He sat in absolute, suffocating silence, leaning forward with his elbows on the table, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. His piercing gaze locked onto Cole like a predator studying a wounded gazelle. The psychological pressure in the room was palpable; several junior executives looked ready to bolt for the exit.
"Mr. Cole," Salvatore began, his voice dangerously soft. "For five years, you signed off on compliance reports that conveniently overlooked anomalous capital outflows to offshore entities in the Cayman Islands. Entities that, as my forensic team just demonstrated thirty minutes ago, trace directly back to accounts controlled by Lucinda Sterling."
"It was standard procedure! A bureaucratic oversight!" Cole protested, his voice cracking.
"Oversight?" Salvatore’s fist slammed onto the mahogany table with a force that rattled the crystal water pitchers. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the expansive room. "My six-year-old daughter was crippled, publicly humiliated, and traumatized because people like you enabled a narcissistic sociopath to believe her wealth made her untouchable! Oversight is a mistake. This was complicity."
Marcus calmly slid a manila folder across the polished wood, stopping it right in front of Cole’s trembling fingers. "Federal indictments for financial fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice, Mr. Cole. Sign the cooperation agreement, hand over your cryptographic keys, and you might see the outside of a federal penitentiary before your hair turns completely white. Refuse, and Moretti Global will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life defending yourself from a prison cell."

Cole stared at the papers, swallowed hard, and reached blindly for the Montblanc pen.
