Chapter 11 - The Specter of the Past

The golden afternoon light bathing the Moretti estate could not entirely penetrate the deep-seated shadows that lingered in the corners of Salvatore Moretti’s mind. Even as little Ruby’s laughter echoed like sweet music across the immaculate marble floors of the grand ballroom, a subtle tension gripped the billionaire’s broad shoulders. He held his daughter tightly, his gaze drifting past the celebrating guests toward the massive wrought-iron gates at the end of the long, private driveway.

Marcus Vance stepped up beside him, holding a crystal flute of sparkling cider. The sharp-eyed legal strategist followed Salvatore’s line of sight. "The perimeter is secure, Salvatore. Private security has swept the grounds twice. Vance Logistics hasn't flagged any anomalous digital footprints since Lucinda’s assets were frozen and her inner circle was subpoenaed."

"Security isn't just about men with guns at the gate, Marcus," Salvatore murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that carried a weight born of decades in the ruthless upper echelons of global finance. "A cornered animal doesn't simply vanish. Lucinda Vance—or rather, Lucinda Sterling, as she’ll soon be known when the court finalizes the strip of her married name—has billions stashed in off-shore accounts that the receivers haven't fully mapped yet. Money talks, and desperate people listen."

Ruby squirmed gently in his arms, her hazel eyes looking up at him with a mixture of curiosity and pure childhood innocence. "Daddy? Are we going to play hide-and-seek in the maze now? Uncle Marcus promised he’d let me be the seeker."

Salvatore’s stern features softened instantly, a tender warmth melting the cold steel in his dark eyes. He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Of course, my little princess. But first, Uncle Marcus and I have a quick conversation to finish. Why don't you go find your cousins by the fountain?"

With a joyful giggle, Ruby scrambled down, her legs moving with perfect, fluid grace—a miraculous recovery that still brought a lump to Salvatore’s throat every time he looked at her. The memory of that horrific afternoon, the cruel sound of Lucinda ripping the medical brace from her injured leg in front of mocking socialites, flashed behind his eyelids. A dark, visceral rage surged through his veins, tightening his grip on his glass until his knuckles turned white.

"She’s safe here," Marcus reassured him softly, reading the dark tempest brewing behind the tycoon's eyes. "No one will ever hurt her again."

"They won't get the chance," Salvatore replied, his voice dropping an octave into a chilling, absolute promise. "Anyone who tries will learn the true meaning of ruin."
