Chapter 20 - The Whispering Shadow

Later that night, long after the estate had fallen into a deep, silent slumber, Salvatore stood alone in his private third-floor study. The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint, silver glow of the full moon shining through the tall Gothic windows.
He stood before the large antique mahogany desk, staring down at the family portrait resting in a silver frame—Ruby smiling brightly, her hazel eyes shining with absolute joy, flanked by his own protective embrace.
The intercom on his desk chimed softly—a single, muted beep reserved exclusively for high-priority encrypted communications from the estate's central security hub.
Frowning, Salvatore pressed the receiver. "Speak."
"Mr. Moretti," came the voice of the head night security officer, sounding uncharacteristically tense and strained. "We have an anomaly on the perimeter sensors near the northern rose garden. A motion-activated camera just picked up a localized heat signature."
Salvatore’s eyes narrowed instantly, all the defensive instincts of a titan springing back to life. "Show me the feed on my private terminal."
Within seconds, the secure monitor on his desk flickered to life, displaying a high-definition night-vision feed of the dark, sprawling rose garden.
At first, there was only the gentle swaying of rosebushes in the midnight breeze. Then, near the edge of the stone pathway, a single object caught the infrared lens: a small, intricately carved wooden box resting neatly on the stone bench, tied with a black silk ribbon.
Salvatore leaned closer to the screen, his heart skipping a beat as he recognized the insignia stamped into the ribbon—a stylized golden serpent biting its own tail. The private mark of an enemy he thought he had buried years ago.
Before Salvatore could issue an order, the security officer’s voice broke through the speaker again, breathless and horrified.
"Sir... the box just opened by remote trigger. There’s something inside it."

Salvatore zoomed in on the monitor. Resting on the velvet lining of the open box was a small, pristine children's medical brace—an exact, terrifying replica of the one Lucinda had ripped from Ruby’s leg weeks ago. And pinned to the velvet was a small white card with a single handwritten sentence that made the blood run cold in Salvatore's veins:
*“The game has only just begun, Salvatore. Checkmate is coming.”*
