Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Canvas

Ethan didn't try to argue. He didn't beg, or scream, or reach out. He knew, with a crushing, absolute finality, that the bridge wasn't just burned—it had been completely erased from the map.
Without another word, he turned around, pushed open the heavy glass door of the gallery, and stepped out into the freezing Chicago snow, vanishing into the white winter night like a shadow dissolving into the dawn.
Claire stood by the door for a long moment, watching the snow fall gently against the glass. The heavy knot of the past, which she hadn't even realized she was still carrying in some hidden corner of her soul, finally dissolved completely into nothingness.
She locked the deadbolt with a firm, satisfying *click*.
Footsteps echoed softly from the back office as Maya walked out holding a leather jacket and a warm scarf, smiling brightly.
"Was that who I think it was?" Maya asked gently, handing Claire her coat.
"It was just a ghost," Claire smiled, slipping her arms into the sleeves of her coat. "And ghosts don't matter anymore."
"Good," Maya beamed, linking her arm through Claire’s. "Because Arthur’s assistant just called. The private jet for our scouting trip to Paris is waiting at O'Hare tomorrow morning at eight sharp. Are you ready to conquer Europe, boss?"
Claire looked back one last time at her sprawling, magnificent gallery—at the golden canvases, the towering ceilings, and the brilliant future she had painted with her own hands, stroke by stroke, tears and triumphs alike.
She smiled—a radiant, unburdened smile that came from the very depths of her soul.
"Let’s go," Claire said, turning toward the door and stepping brightly out into the crisp, beautiful winter air. "We have an entire world left to paint."
... *As the sleek black town car pulled away from the curb and merged into the glittering lights of the Michigan Avenue traffic, Claire rested her head against the leather seat, watching the snow-covered skyline of Chicago fade into the distance.*

*Her phone lit up in her lap with a quiet buzz. A notification popped up on the screen from an unknown international number, displaying a single, mysterious photograph of an empty, sunlit art studio overlooking the Seine in Paris—and a short, handwritten caption waiting to be read.*
