Chapter 33 - The Counter-Strategy

The silence between them stretched for a long, heavy moment, broken only by the distant clatter of ceramic cups and the murmur of Parisian patrons conversing in French.

Claire picked up her glass of sparkling water, took a slow sip, and let the bubbles settle before she spoke. "And why are you telling me this, Hélène? You spent thirty years protecting the Sterling name at all costs, burying scandals, and treating everyone outside your inner circle as collateral damage. Why warn the ex-wife your son tried to destroy?"

Hélène lifted her demitasse cup, taking a slow sip of the dark, bitter espresso before setting it back down with a sharp *clink*. She looked up, her gaze unflinching.

"Because Arthur is no longer a Sterling worth protecting," Hélène said, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "He is a liability. A weak, petulant boy playing a man’s game, and he has brought shame upon the foundation my husband and I spent forty years building. When I handed you those ledgers at his promotion party, I didn't just burn him—I cut out the rot. But rot has a way of spreading if you don't cauterize the wound completely."

"You want me to help you finish him off," Claire stated, not as a question, but as a realization.

"I want you to protect what is yours by using the one weapon Arthur’s new backers never anticipated," Hélène replied smoothly. "They think you’re a fragile artist who will fold under the pressure of federal depositions and legal intimidation. They expect you to panic, settle out of court, and hand over your gallery shares just to make the nightmare go away."

"And what do you propose?" Claire asked, resting her elbows on the table, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"Don't fight them in the courtroom," Hélène said, leaning in closer. "Fight them in the public square. My son’s new backers are heavily invested in a massive municipal infrastructure project in New York—the Hudson Yards expansion. Their entire capital hinges on public perception and clean ESG ratings. If the media catches wind of the fact that they are actively financing a disgraced corporate criminal’s campaign of harassment against an internationally acclaimed female artist... their investors will pull out within forty-eight hours."

Claire looked at the older woman, a slow, calculated understanding dawning on her. "You have the dossier on those investors."

"I have every financial wire, every shell company registration, and every offshore account number connecting Arthur’s new partners to illegal lobbying," Hélène stated calmly, reaching into her structured leather handbag. She pulled out a sleek, encrypted flash drive and slid it across the table, right beside Claire’s coffee cup. "Everything you need to completely dismantle their financial backing is on that drive."

Claire looked down at the small black piece of plastic, then back up at her former mother-in-law. "Why give this to me? You could drop this to the SEC or the press yourself."

"If I do it, it looks like a bitter family feud," Hélène replied with a cold, aristocratic smile. "If *you* do it—the triumphant artist whose gallery was targeted by corporate predators—it becomes a global crusade for justice. The media will eat it alive. And Arthur will be reduced to a footnote in financial history."

Claire reached out, her fingers closing around the flash drive. It felt cool and weightless, yet it held the absolute power to crush the man who had tried to destroy her life.

"Thank you, Hélène," Claire said quietly.

"Don't thank me, Claire," the matriarch replied, standing up and buttoning her wool coat with crisp precision. "Just make sure when you strike, you don't leave a single piece standing."
