Chapter 35 - The Friday Morning Ambush

The hallway outside Courtroom 302 of the Manhattan Supreme Court was electric with tension. Arthur Sterling stood near the mahogany double doors, looking remarkably pleased with himself. Dressed in a bespoke Brioni suit that clearly cost more than most people's cars, he was flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys who were quietly reviewing their motion papers.

Arthur’s eyes lit up with malicious triumph as he spotted Claire stepping out of the elevator, flanked by Maya and Marcus Vance.

"Well, well, well," Arthur sneered, stepping directly into Claire’s path with a smug, condescending grin. "Look who finally decided to show up. Did you really think you could run off to Europe, play the eccentric little artist, and keep millions in stolen settlement assets without a fight?"

Claire didn't flinch. She stopped mere inches from him, looking down at him with an expression of profound, absolute pity that hit him harder than any insult could have.

"You look tired, Arthur," Claire said softly, her voice carrying clearly down the marble hallway. "All that desperate legal maneuvering must be exhausting. Have you checked your phone lately?"

Arthur’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flicker of genuine irritation. "Save the psychological dramatics, Claire. The judge is going to sign the emergency asset freeze in ten minutes, and your precious Parisian gallery is going to be seized to cover my legal fees. You’re done."

Before Claire could reply, the heavy oak doors of Courtroom 302 swung open, and the bailiff stepped out. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas Sterling—no relation," the bailiff added quickly, eyeing the room. "Case number 8842-B, Sterling versus Sterling. Counsel, enter the courtroom."

As everyone filed inside, the atmosphere shifted instantly. Arthur took his seat at the plaintiff’s table, whispering smugly to his lead attorney, while Claire sat composed and motionless at the defense table, resting her hands calmly on her leather portfolio.

Judge Thomas Sterling adjusted his glasses, scanning the initial filings with a look of mild boredom. "Counsel for the plaintiff, you requested an emergency injunction regarding the defendant's assets. You have five minutes to justify why this court should override a legally binding divorce settlement."

Arthur’s lead attorney stood up, buttoning his jacket with practiced confidence. "Your Honor, our client has uncovered compelling evidence that the original settlement was executed under duress and material misrepresentation of corporate assets—"

*Bzzzz. Bzzzz. Bzzzz.*

The sharp, synchronized vibration of multiple smartphones echoed loudly through the quiet courtroom.

At the plaintiff's table, Arthur’s attorney paused mid-sentence, frowning as his phone lit up with a barrage of notifications. Across the room, one of Arthur’s junior associates pulled out his phone, glanced at the screen, and instantly turned sheet-white.

"Counsel," Judge Sterling barked, banging his gavel sharply against the wooden block. "Turn your electronic devices off or be held in contempt of court! What is the meaning of this interruption?"

"Your Honor, I—I apologize," Arthur’s attorney stammered, his hands shaking slightly as he stared down at his screen. "We have an urgent development—"

"It’s not just an urgent development, Your Honor," Marcus Vance interrupted smoothly, standing up and buttoning his own suit jacket. He held up a freshly printed copy of *The Wall Street Journal* that a runner had just handed him at the courtroom doors. "It’s front-page news. *The Wall Street Journal*, *Bloomberg*, and *Financial Times* just dropped simultaneous investigative reports exposing Vanguard Capital—the exact venture capital firm financing the plaintiff’s lawsuit—for massive financial fraud, money laundering, and illegal municipal lobbying."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery.

Arthur spun around in his chair, his face draining of all color. "What are you talking about?" he whispered hoarsely to his lawyer.

Marcus continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority across the silent courtroom. "Furthermore, the federal dossier explicitly details how the plaintiff, Arthur Sterling, colluded with these exact fraudulent entities to launch a campaign of malicious litigation against my client, Claire Sterling, in an attempt to recover assets lost due to his own proven embezzlement."

Judge Sterling’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he looked down from the bench. He picked up his tablet, quickly pulling up the digital edition of the morning’s financial news. Within seconds, the veins in the judge's temples began to pulse.
