Chapter 4 - The Monday Morning Audit

The alarm clock buzzed at 6:00 AM on Monday morning.
Claire woke up not with tears or panic, but with a strange, pristine clarity. For the first time in nine years, she didn't have to check the schedule of a man who treated her like an afterthought. She didn't have to worry about whether Ethan’s favorite coffee mug was washed, or if his dry cleaning was picked up, or whether he was stressed about his precious corporate ladder.
She walked downstairs in her silk bathrobe, the house wonderfully quiet. The fairy lights from the party had been unplugged and packed away into a cardboard box by Maya before she left the night before. The blue frosting had been scrubbed clean from the wainscoting.
At exactly 8:15 AM, the doorbell rang.
Claire opened it to find Uncle Arthur standing on the front porch, holding a large leather briefcase and two large cardboard cups of dark roast coffee from the local bakery down the street.
"Morning, Claire," Arthur said cheerfully, stepping past her into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "I hope you like dark roast. We have a very busy morning ahead of us."
"Good morning, Arthur," Claire said, taking the cup gratefully and inhaling the rich aroma. "What kind of busy?"
Arthur walked into the kitchen, unzipped his briefcase, and pulled out a stack of thick financial folders, tablet printouts, and corporate organizational charts. He laid them out across the kitchen island like a battle general reviewing enemy territory.
"Phase One is already complete," Arthur announced, taking a sip of his coffee. "As of 7:30 AM, Diane’s corporate liaison delivered a formal compliance audit notice to the HR director at Ethan’s firm. They pulled his digital communications, his expense accounts, and Vanessa’s performance logs."
Claire leaned against the counter, wrapping both hands around her warm coffee cup. "And? What did they find?"
"Let’s just say that Vanessa’s promotion from junior analyst to senior project lead last month wasn't earned based on her metrics," Arthur said dryly, tapping a finger against a printed spreadsheet filled with highlighted numbers. "Ethan routed three major client accounts through her portfolio illegally, bypassing the regional compliance queue, and conveniently approved a twenty-percent off-cycle salary bump for her while they were attending a 'conference' in Miami three months ago."
Claire felt a cold knot form in her stomach. "That’s… that’s corporate fraud. He could be prosecuted."
"He is being investigated," Arthur corrected smoothly. "The firm’s internal audit committee suspended him with pay pending an emergency termination hearing at 10:00 AM this morning. By noon, his badge will be deactivated, his company laptop will be wiped, and his name will be scrubbed from the regional director directory."
Claire stared at the spreadsheets. Nine years. Nine years of listening to Ethan complain about how hard he worked, how much he sacrificed, how his father never believed in him—all built on a foundation of cutting corners, manipulating systems, and arrogance.
"Where is he now?" Claire asked quietly.
"Probably waking up on a pull-out couch at Vanessa’s cramped one-bedroom apartment in Lakeview," Arthur replied without missing a beat. "Which brings us to Phase Two: The asset containment."
Arthur slid a legal document across the granite countertop toward Claire. At the top, bold letters read Notice of Temporary Restraining Order and Property Exclusivity Mandate.
"Because the property trust is administered under my firm and protected by Diane’s initial equity rider, Ethan has zero legal right to step foot on this property without a scheduled, supervised eviction retrieval window," Arthur explained. "Which means when he inevitably shows up today to grab his clothes and his golf clubs, he won't be able to just waltz in with a key."
Just as Arthur finished speaking, a loud, frantic pounding echoed from the front door.
Bam, bam, bam.

Claire and Arthur exchanged glances. Arthur didn't even blink; he just took another sip of his coffee.
"Right on schedule," Arthur muttered. "Shall we?"
