Chapter 22 - Ghosts of the Boulevard

The Citroën wound its way through the historic cobblestone streets of the 6th arrondissement, past wrought-iron balconies dripping with early ivy and charming little cafés where waiters were just setting out small round tables and wicker chairs. The atmosphere was intoxicating—a rich blend of roasting espresso, fresh croissants, and centuries of artistic defiance.
The car slowed to a halt in front of a majestic, three-story limestone building on a quiet, tree-lined side street just blocks from the Seine. A heavy wrought-iron gate guarded a sun-drenched courtyard where a magnificent old chestnut tree stood with bare, elegant branches.
"We have arrived, mesdames," the driver announced politely in accented English, stepping out to open their doors.
Claire stepped onto the smooth stone pavement, tilting her head back to look up at the tall French windows on the second floor. Sunlight caught the glass, reflecting a warm, golden invitation. This was the building from the photograph. This was the space awaiting her brushstrokes.
As they walked through the courtyard, the heavy oak front door swung open effortlessly. Standing in the sunlit foyer was not Arthur, nor a mysterious French poet, but a tall, elegant woman in a tailored charcoal wool coat and silver-streaked hair pulled back into a sophisticated chignon. Her eyes—a startling, luminous hazel—held an unmistakable spark of warmth and recognition.
"Claire," the woman said, her voice rich with a quiet, melodic authority. "You made it. Welcome to your new domain."
Claire froze for a fraction of a second, studying the woman's face. There was something achingly familiar about the curve of the jaw, the posture of quiet dignity, though they had never met in person.
"You're..." Claire started, her breath catching in her throat.
"I am Hélène Laurent," the woman replied, stepping forward and extending a slender hand adorned with a single, magnificent vintage emerald ring. "And before you ask, no, I am not a ghost, though I have spent a lifetime haunting these very rooms."
Maya gasped softly, grabbing Claire’s arm. *“Hélène Laurent? As in... the Hélène Laurent? The legendary curator of the Louvre’s contemporary wing?”*
Hélène smiled, her hazel eyes crinkling at the corners. "The very same, my dear. Though today, I am simply a woman who saw a young artist in Chicago paint her way out of a burning house, and decided that such fire deserved a proper hearth."
Claire shook Hélène’s hand, feeling the solid, grounding pressure of a kindred spirit. "You saw the Chicago exhibition?"
"I saw everything, Claire," Hélène said, turning and gesturing for them to follow her up a wide, curving staircase of white marble. "The pain, the betrayal, the public humiliation at that wretched promotion party—and most importantly, the moment you picked up your brush and chose creation over destruction. Men like Richard Sterling build their entire lives on hollow foundations of status and applause. They crumble at the first tremor. But women like us? We are forged in the rubble."
As they reached the top of the landing, Hélène pushed open a set of double doors, and Claire’s breath completely hitched.
The studio was breathtaking. Spanning the entire top floor, it featured soaring ceilings crossed by massive wooden beams, walls painted a pristine, light-diffusing matte white, and massive arched windows that flooded the room with the legendary, ethereal light of Paris. Easels stood ready, jars of pristine brushes waited on long oak tables, and the faint, comforting scent of linseed oil and turpentine hung in the air.
"This," Hélène said softly, sweeping her hand across the magnificent space, "is where you will prepare for your European debut. The elite of Paris are already whispering about the fierce, brilliant American artist who turned a scandal into a masterpiece. Are you ready to show them what a true sovereign looks like?"
Claire walked to the center of the room, closed her eyes, and breathed in the scent of infinite possibility. When she opened them, her gaze was steady, fierce, and utterly unshakeable.

"Let’s begin," Claire said.
