Chapter 32 - Shadows on the Rue de Seine

The rain began to fall just as dusk settled over the Left Bank, slicking the ancient paving stones of Rue de Seine and casting shimmering reflections of streetlamps across the glass windows of *Café de Flore*. Inside, the atmosphere was warm, smelling of roasted espresso beans and aged leather.
Claire sat at a corner booth tucked away from the main crowd, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal blazer over a simple silk turtleneck. She kept her posture relaxed, sipping a perrier with a slice of lemon, her eyes calmly watching the entrance.
At precisely seven o'clock, the brass bell above the door chimed.
Hélène Sterling stepped inside, cutting through the sophisticated crowd with the effortless, intimidating grace of a queen who had ruled high society for decades. Despite the transatlantic flight and the relentless pressures of her crumbling family dynasty, the older woman looked immaculate in a structured black wool coat, her silver-streaked hair swept into a severe chignon, her eyes sharp and unblinking behind dark-rimmed designer glasses.
She spotted Claire immediately. Without a word to the maitre d', Hélène walked straight to the corner booth and slid into the leather banquette opposite Claire.
"Paris agrees with you, Claire," Hélène said without preamble, her voice low, raspy, and carrying that unmistakable Manhattan boardroom authority. "You look... untethered. In the best possible sense of the word."
Claire didn't smile, nor did she bristle. She simply met the older woman’s gaze head-on. "The air is cleaner here, Hélène. And the colors on the canvas don’t lie. To what do I owe the honor of a private audience? Did your private jet break down on the way to the Swiss Alps, or is there an actual crisis bringing you to my doorstep?"
Hélène let out a dry, humorless sound that might have been a chuckle under different circumstances. She signaled the waiter with a single, imperious flick of her gloved finger, ordering a double espresso before turning her full, piercing attention back to Claire.
"The board of Sterling Logistics is tearing itself apart," Hélène said, her tone dropping into a dangerous, confidential register. "Arthur has spent the last three months trying to litigate his way out of the embezzlement charges, dragging the family name through the mud with every pathetic motion his high-priced defense attorneys file. But that’s not why I’m here."
"Then enlighten me," Claire prompted evenly.
"Arthur isn't just fighting the corporate fallout," Hélène leaned forward, her fingers interlaced on the polished wooden table. "He’s broke, Claire. Completely, utterly, catastrophically broke. The mistress—that ambitious little PR creature he tried to parade at his promotion party—cleaned out his liquid accounts the moment the scandal broke and vanished to the Cayman Islands. And now, Arthur is desperate. He’s trying to claw back the settlement assets he foolishly signed over to you in the rush of the divorce."
Claire felt a cold spike of adrenaline, but her outward demeanor remained as still as still water. "The settlement was legally binding, signed in front of a federal judge, and backed by the financial ledgers *you* personally handed over, Hélène. He has no legal grounds to touch my assets or my gallery shares."
"Legally? No," Hélène replied, a hard edge sharpening her voice. "But desperate men do not play by legal rules. Arthur has aligned himself with some very unsavory vulture capitalists—people who specialize in weaponizing frivolous lawsuits to drain opponents through attrition. They are coming for your new European gallery, Claire. Not because of the money, but because destroying your success is the only way Arthur can salvage his shattered ego."

Claire stared at the older woman, watching the subtle twitch in the corner of Hélène’s eye—a rare telltale sign of deep, suppressed stress. For the first time, Claire realized the full scope of the war. This wasn't just about a bitter ex-husband anymore; it was a coordinated strike against everything Claire had built with her own hands.
