Chapter 31 - The transatlantic summons

The morning air in the Marais district carried the crisp, invigorating scent of freshly baked brioche and damp cobblestones, a stark and welcome contrast to the stifling, perfume-heavy atmosphere of New York high society that Claire Sterling had left behind. Sitting at the rustic oak table in her sun-drenched Parisian studio, Claire traced the rim of her coffee mug, her eyes fixed on the glowing screen of her laptop. Three emails sat unread in her inbox, all originating from the same address: *Sterling & Associates, Corporate Headquarters, Manhattan.*
Maya bustled into the room, balancing a stack of thick art supply catalogs and a tablet displaying the morning's exhibition metrics. "The buzz from last night’s vernissage hasn't even cooled down, and my phone is already melting," Maya announced, tossing her blond curls over her shoulder with an energetic grin. "Galleries in London and Milan are practically begging for an extension on your European tour. But you look like you’re staring at a ghost. Don’t tell me Arthur’s lawyers found a new loophole in the divorce settlement?"
Claire slowly turned the laptop screen toward her friend. "Not Arthur," she murmured, a faint, reflective shadow crossing her features. "It’s his mother. Hélène."
Maya’s smile vanished, her posture instantly rigid. Hélène Sterling—the formidable, ice-veined matriarch of the Sterling empire who had publicly obliterated her own son and his mistress at that disastrous promotion party months ago—was not a woman who made idle inquiries.
"What does she want?" Maya asked, stepping closer to read the subject line of the primary email. *Personal and Confidential: An Invitation to Redefine the Legacy.*
"She isn't asking for a meeting in New York," Claire said, reading the text aloud. "She’s flying to Paris. Tonight. And she wants to meet me at a neutral location—the café on the corner of Rue de Seine."
Maya crossed her arms, skepticism written across every line of her face. "After everything that woman put you through, even if she did turn on Arthur at the eleventh hour to save your dignity and hand you the proof of his embezzlement, she’s still a Sterling. Blood is thicker than water, Claire. What if this is a trap? What if Arthur is behind this, trying to claw back the financial independence you secured in the settlement?"
Claire stood up, walking over to the tall, arched window that overlooked the bustling Parisian street below. The memory of that night in Manhattan was still vivid—the flashbulbs, the betrayal, the crushing realization that her entire marriage had been a facade, followed immediately by Hélène stepping up to the microphone with the financial ledger that destroyed Arthur’s career in a single sentence. Hélène hadn't done it out of maternal love for Claire; she had done it to protect the Sterling name from Arthur’s staggering incompetence. Yet, in doing so, she had unwittingly handed Claire the keys to her freedom.
"It’s not a trap, Maya," Claire said quietly, watching a pigeon take flight from a nearby zinc roof. "Hélène is a strategist. People like her don’t make emotional moves. If she’s coming to Paris to see me in person, it means something massive has shifted in Manhattan, and she needs someone she can actually trust—someone outside the corporate bloodbath."
"Trust?" Maya snorted lightly. "That’s a heavy word for a Sterling."
May you like
"Maybe," Claire conceded, turning back to face her friend with a resolute expression. "But I’m not the timid, insecure wife I was six months ago. Let her come. I want to see what the great Hélène Sterling looks like when her own empire starts crumbling from the inside out."
