Chapter 34 - The Return to Manhattan

Three days later, the private jet touched down at Teterboro Airport under a bleak, overcast New York sky. The transition from the romantic warmth of Paris to the biting, industrial wind of the Manhattan tarmac felt symbolic—a return to the battlefield.

Maya sat across the aisle, tapping furiously on her tablet as she reviewed the digital dossiers Hélène had provided. "I still can’t believe we agreed to this," Maya muttered without looking up. "We were supposed to be planning the Tokyo retrospective. Instead, we’re flying into the belly of the beast to declare total economic war on Arthur and his venture capitalist puppet-masters."

"We aren't starting the war, Maya; we’re finishing it," Claire said, staring out the reinforced window as the jet taxied toward the private hangar. Her reflection in the glass was sharp, composed, and devoid of any lingering hesitation. The days of crying over burnt photo albums and locked bank accounts were a lifetime away.

Waiting for them at the private terminal was a sleek black town car dispatched by their legal team, alongside their lead attorney, Marcus Vance—a shark-like litigator known for winning high-stakes corporate defamation cases.

As Claire and Maya stepped out into the crisp autumn air, Marcus was already holding the door open, a grim yet respectful nod on his face.

"Welcome back to New York, Ms. Sterling," Marcus said as they slid into the luxurious leather interior of the car. "The timing couldn’t be more precise. Arthur’s legal team filed the injunction against your gallery assets less than twenty-four hours ago. They’re trying to force an emergency hearing for Friday morning."

Claire opened her laptop, plugging the encrypted flash drive directly into the USB port. The screen flickered, unlocking a labyrinth of encrypted folders containing bank statements, offshore wire transfers, and internal memos from Arthur’s new backers, *Vanguard Capital Partners*.

"Let them schedule their hearing," Claire said, her voice eerily calm as she scrolled through the damning evidence. "By Friday morning, Vanguard Capital won't even have the funds to pay their own legal counsel, let alone finance Arthur’s delusions."

Marcus peered over the back of the seat, his eyes widening as he scanned the data packets on the screen. "Good God, Claire. Where did you get this? This isn't just corporate malfeasance—this is federal-level money laundering disguised as municipal real estate investment."

"Let's just say I had an unexpected family consultation in Paris," Claire replied smoothly, forwarding the entire encrypted database to Marcus’s secure server. "I want every single document packaged into an investigative press release. Distribute it exclusively to *The Wall Street Journal*, *Bloomberg*, and *Financial Times* by midnight. Embargoed until 8:00 AM Friday—exactly one hour before Arthur’s emergency injunction hearing."

Maya let out a low whistle, leaning back against the upholstery with a wide, wicked grin. "Oh, this is delicious. They’re going to walk into the courtroom expecting a terrified artist, and they’re going to get hit by a freight train."

"Make sure the press package highlights the exact connection between Vanguard Capital, the illegal lobbying funds, and Arthur Sterling’s personal involvement," Claire added, her eyes locked on the Manhattan skyline as the town car crossed the bridge into the city. "I want his name attached to every single headline. No hiding behind corporate shells."

Marcus nodded sharply, his professional instincts kicking into overdrive. "Consider it done. I’ll assemble our PR crisis team and brief the journalists within the hour. Arthur won't know what hit him until the front page of every major financial paper drops his name in bold ink."
