Chapter 36 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Sterling’s voice thundered through the courtroom, dropping like a lead weight upon the terrified plaintiff.

Arthur slowly stood up from his chair, his knees visibly shaking beneath the heavy wool of his designer suit. "Y-Your Honor?" he croaked, his voice entirely devoid of its earlier arrogance.

"Are you currently under federal investigation for securities fraud related to Vanguard Capital?" the judge demanded, holding his tablet up as physical proof of the digital articles cascading across the internet.

"That—that is a malicious lie!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking desperately as panic finally broke through his composure. "My attorneys are handling—this is a smear campaign orchestrated by my ex-wife to destroy my reputation!"

"Your reputation was destroyed the moment you tried to use a fraudulent shell company to litigate against this court!" Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down with a deafening crack that rattled the courtroom windows. "Case dismissed with prejudice! Furthermore, this court is initiating an immediate referral to the U.S. Attorney’s Office to investigate the plaintiff and his financial backers for abuse of the legal system and corporate conspiracy!"

The gallery erupted into a cacophony of murmurs and whispered gasps.

Arthur’s lead attorney slammed his files shut, grabbed his briefcase, and bolted out of the courtroom without uttering another word, effectively abandoning his client on the spot.

Arthur stood frozen at the plaintiff’s table, his mouth slightly open, staring blankly at the judge as the reality of his total, irreversible destruction washed over him. His career, his money, his legal standing, and his social status—all of it had evaporated in less than five minutes.

Claire slowly stood up from her seat, gathering her portfolio with quiet, deliberate movements. She didn't gloat. She didn't shout. She simply turned her head and looked directly at Arthur as she walked down the center aisle toward the double doors.

As she passed him, Arthur reached out with a trembling hand, his voice breaking into a pathetic whisper. "Claire... wait. Please. Talk to me. Your mother-in-law—Hélène must have given you that data. She destroyed her own son—"

Claire stopped, turning her head slightly to look down at the pathetic wreck of a man who had once tried to crush her spirit.

"You didn't need any help destroying yourself, Arthur," Claire said quietly, her voice cold and devoid of any remaining emotion. "You built a house of cards out of lies and greed. All I did was open the window."

With that, she turned her back on him completely and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, blinding light of a brand-new Manhattan morning, leaving Arthur standing alone in the empty wreckage of his own making.
