Chapter 12 - Shadows Beneath the Mistletoe

The morning sun broke over Boston harbor, casting a pale, blinding light across the frozen crust of snow that coated the city streets. Inside the Commonwealth Avenue estate, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the brewing storm outside. The living room was dominated by a towering, magnificent Fraser fir adorned with handmade ornaments, sparkling fairy lights, and strands of popcorn strung by Sophie’s small hands.
Elena stood by the kitchen island, pouring hot, steaming mugs of spiced cocoa. She wore a cream-colored cashmere sweater that Dante had insisted on buying her, the fabric soft against her skin—a physical reminder of the warmth that had replaced the bitter cold of her past life.
Dante entered the room, his broad shoulders filling the doorway. He had already shed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos that snaked up his muscular arms. Despite the calm demeanor he projected, a subtle tension lingered in the set of his jaw. A lifetime in the underworld leaves a man with instincts that never truly sleep, and since dawn, a strange, persistent prickle of unease had been dancing along the back of his neck.
"You're up early," Elena said softly, turning to hand him a mug. Her green eyes searched his face, immediately catching the slight furrow between his brows. "Is something wrong, Dante? You've been pacing the hallway since six."
Dante took the mug, his fingers brushing against hers. The simple contact grounded him, melting away the cold edge of his paranoia. "Just ghosts, El. Nothing for you to worry about."
"You don't have to carry everything alone anymore," she reminded him gently, stepping closer and resting her palm against his chest, right over his steady, powerful heartbeat. "We're a team now. Remember?"
Before Dante could answer, a loud, cheerful shriek echoed down the grand staircase.
"Mommy! Dante! It’s Christmas Day!"
Sophie came barreling down the steps in her red flannel pajamas, her dark curls bouncing with every bound. She slid across the polished hardwood floor in her fuzzy reindeer socks, skidding to a halt right at Dante’s feet.
Dante’s face instantly softened, the hard lines of the ruthless syndicate boss melting away to reveal the devoted father figure he had quietly become. He crouched down, scooping the little girl effortlessly into his arms as she squealed with delight.
"Merry Christmas, little spark," Dante murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Did you check the tree? I think Santa left a mountain of paper for you to tear through."
For the next hour, the grand living room was filled with the paper-shredding chaos of a traditional family Christmas. Sophie unwrapped dollhouses, art kits, and a small, delicate silver charm bracelet—a gift from Dante that matched her mother’s. Elena watched from the sofa, her heart swelling with an emotion so fierce and profound it brought tears to her eyes. She had survived the dark winter nights; she had made it to the other side.
Yet, outside the wrought-iron gates of the estate, parked half a block down under the shadow of a leafless oak tree, a sleek black sedan sat idling in the snow. Inside, Marcus adjusted his rearview mirror, watching the glowing windows of the Moretti home. He reached for his encrypted burner phone and dialed a single number.
"It's done," Marcus said into the receiver. "They're inside. The perimeter is quiet."

"Good," Vance’s voice crackled back through the static. "Deliver the package. Let’s see how long Moretti’s domestic bliss survives the reality of his world."
