Chapter 19 - Dawn of a New Era

The interior of the lodge was warm, filled with the rich, comforting scent of burning pine logs from the stone fireplace.
Elena was sitting on the edge of the oversized sofa wrapped in a thick wool blanket, staring intently into the dying embers of the fire. She hadn't slept all night. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath her green eyes, and every time the wind howled outside, her head would snap toward the door in agonizing suspense.
When the front door creaked open, she dropped the mug of tea she was holding—it shattered against the hearth with a sharp crack, spilling dark liquid across the stone.
She scrambled to her feet and rushed into the hallway.
There stood Dante. His coat was dusted with fresh snow, his knuckles bruised, and a small cut graced his cheekbone, but he was standing tall, his eyes shining with an unmistakable warmth as he looked at her.
"Dante," Elena choked out, a sob catching in her throat as she threw herself forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
Dante caught her effortlessly, burying his face in her neck as his strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her so tightly against his chest that there was no space left between them. He breathed in the scent of her hair, letting the absolute terror of the past twenty-four hours finally wash away.
"It's over," Dante murmured softly against her ear, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s all over, El. You’re safe. Sophie is safe. No one will ever touch you again."
Elena pulled back just enough to look up into his face, her hands trembling as she gently traced the cut on his cheekbone. "You're hurt."
"It's nothing," Dante smiled, a genuine, soft smile that reached his eyes. "I’ve had worse."
At that moment, a sleepy voice echoed from the top of the wooden stairs.
"Mommy? Dante?"
Sophie appeared on the landing, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hand, wearing her red flannel pajamas. She looked down at them, blinking against the morning light. "Did Santa come back?"
Dante looked up at the little girl, his heart swelling with a fierce, protective love that defied all his past sins. He reached out his hand toward her.

"Come down here, little spark," Dante called out softly. "Let's go home."
