Chapter 4 - The Manor on the Hill

The black armored SUV glided silently through the snow-covered gates of the Moretti estate. Towering pine trees lined the long, winding driveway, their heavy branches sagging under pounds of fresh snow.

In the back seat, Sophie had finally given in to exhaustion, her head resting heavily on Elena’s lap, fast asleep with Mr. Bun tucked under her arm. Elena stared out the tinted window at the massive stone mansion coming into view. It looked like an old European fortress, lit by amber lanterns that burned bravely against the darkness of the storm.

Dante sat in the front passenger seat, staring straight ahead, a cold silence surrounding him.

"We're clear, Boss," the driver, a thick-necked man named Marco, said softly. "No tails from the city."

"Keep the perimeter guards on double watch," Dante replied without turning around. "Julian Donati doesn't wait when he thinks he has leverage."

The vehicle pulled up to the grand front entrance. The doors were opened by armed guards in black coats. Dante stepped out first, offering a hand to help Elena out of the high vehicle. She hesitated for a second before taking it. His grip was firm, warm, and unexpectedly reassuring.

"I can carry her," Elena whispered as she reached back to scoop up the sleeping child.

"She's heavy," Dante said simply. Before Elena could protest, he leaned into the back seat, gently lifted Sophie into his arms, and wrapped his own heavy coat around her small body to block the freezing wind.

Elena followed him up the wide stone steps and through the massive iron doors into the grand foyer.

The interior of the manor was warm, smelling of cedarwood, leather, and fresh pine. A towering stone fireplace roared in the main hall, illuminating high ceilings and oil paintings of dark-eyed ancestors.

A housekeeper in her fifties, wearing a sharp grey dress, bustled forward. "Mr. Dante! You're back early. And... guests?"

"This is Elena Carter and her daughter, Sophie," Dante said, carefully handing the sleeping girl into Elena’s arms once they were safely inside. "Mrs. Hudson, prepare the east wing suite. Make sure it's warm. Bring up food, warm milk, and extra blankets."

"Right away, sir," Mrs. Hudson said, her eyes softening as she looked at Elena’s worn clothes and tired face. "Follow me, my dear."

As Elena started to follow the housekeeper up the grand curved staircase, she paused and looked back down at Dante. He was standing near the fireplace, unbuttoning his vest, staring into the flames with a heavy expression.

"Mr. Moretti?" she called softly.

Dante looked up.

"Why are you doing this?" Elena asked, her voice echoing slightly in the vast hall. "You don't know us. My husband was just a worker. You could have taken the drive and left us behind."

Dante remained silent for a long moment. The firelight cast deep shadows across his sharp jawline.

"My father died three years ago," Dante said, his voice low and quiet. "The same night your husband did. I spent three years thinking my father was betrayed by his own people. Tonight, because of your daughter, I found out the truth."

He stepped closer to the foot of the stairs, looking up at her.

"David Carter died trying to save my family's legacy. The least I can do is keep his family alive."

Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She nodded once, unable to speak, and turned to follow Mrs. Hudson up the stairs.

Ten minutes later, Elena had tucked Sophie into a plush, king-sized bed covered in soft feather duvets. The little girl gave a long, contented sigh, turning on her side and burying her face in the pillows.

Elena sat on the edge of the bed, staring out the massive bay window at the blizzard outside. For the first time in three years, she wasn't worrying about rent, or food, or the cold. But a new, terrifying fear had taken its place.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Elena stood up quickly and opened it. Standing in the hallway was Isabella.

The fiancée was no longer wearing her red gala gown. She was dressed in a sleek, black silk blouse and tailored trousers. Her eyes were sharp, stripped of all the fake warmth she had shown at the hotel.

"Can I help you?" Elena asked defensively, holding the door handle tight.

Isabella stepped into the room without being invited, her eyes scanning the luxury of the guest suite before turning to Elena.

"You're very clever, aren't you?" Isabella said, a mocking smile touching her blood-red lips. "Using a helpless little girl to pull on Dante's heartstrings. He always was a sucker for a tragic story."

"I didn't ask for any of this," Elena said coldly. "We were brought here."

"And you should leave," Isabella stepped closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You have no idea what world you just stepped into, Elena. Dante isn't a knight in shining armor. He's a mob boss. And the men coming for that watch will not care about your little girl."

Isabella pulled a thick white envelope from her coat pocket and tossed it onto the desk.

"There's fifty thousand dollars in cash in that envelope," Isabella said smoothly. "Take it. My driver is waiting at the side gate. He will take you to the train station before Dante realizes you're gone. Get out of Massachusetts tonight."

Elena looked from the money to Isabella’s cold, demanding eyes. She realized then that Isabella wasn't just worried about Dante's safety—she was terrified of what was on that microchip.
