Chapter 30 - The Ring of the Doorbell

Dante slipped the platinum band onto Elena’s finger, the cold metal warming instantly against her skin. As he stood up, she threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate, and utterly liberating kiss.
Across the room, little Sophie cheered, clapping her hands together. "Yay! Mommy and Dante are getting married!"
Dante and Elena pulled apart, laughing softly as Dante scooped Sophie up into his arms, spinning her around the room while the little girl shrieked with delight. Elena watched them, her soul finally at peace, knowing that the nightmare was truly over and their real life had finally begun.
Later that afternoon, the small family decided to take a walk through the sunlit Boston Public Garden, leaving the past buried in the snow behind them. They walked hand-in-hand down the snow-dusted paths, breathing in the crisp, clean winter air, laughing as Sophie chased a stray squirrel darting between the oak trees.
For the first time in their lives, they didn't look back over their shoulders. They didn't scan the crowds for watchers. They simply walked forward, into the bright, open future waiting for them on the other side of the winter.
They returned to the penthouse as twilight began to paint the evening sky in deep purples and indigos, locking the heavy oak door behind them with a satisfying click. Dante set down their coats, and Elena was just reaching into the kitchen to prep dinner when a sudden sound echoed through the quiet hallway.
*Ding-Dong.*
The cheerful chime of the front doorbell rang out into the silent apartment, startling the quiet evening.
Dante froze instantly, his body snapping back into a state of absolute, hyper-vigilant readiness, his hand dropping automatically toward his waist before he caught himself. Elena turned around from the kitchen counter, her face turning pale as she stared at the heavy wooden door.

"Dante..." she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Who could that possibly be? Everyone who knows this place is gone."
Dante didn't answer. His dark eyes narrowed, a cold, hard shadow crossing his face as he walked slowly across the living room toward the front door, his hand resting lightly on the brass handle as the doorbell rang a second time.
