Chapter 25 - The Gathering Storm

By noon, the blizzard had cleared, leaving Boston looking like a pristine postcard under a brilliant, blinding winter sun. Inside the penthouse, however, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Sophie was awake now, sitting at the kitchen island eating pancakes that Dante had quietly whipped up, her bright laughter filling the room as if nothing had happened the night before. Children had a miraculous way of bouncing back, shielded by innocence. But in the study behind closed glass doors, the adults were staring down the barrel of a war.

Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his phone pressed to his ear. On the other end was Marcus, the only high-ranking loyalist from the old syndicate who had successfully faded into legitimate business after Dante's retirement.

"Are you certain about the location?" Dante asked, his voice low and cutting.

*“Positive, Boss,”* Marcus’s gravelly voice came through the speaker. *“Vince Moretti—the old man's nephew—took over the remnants. They're regrouping at an abandoned shipping warehouse down by the old dry docks in South Boston. They think you're still hiding in the woods. They're planning a full strike on your properties tonight.”*

"They think I'm prey," Dante said coldly. "They forgot who built the docks."

*“What are your orders, Dante? I've got thirty men ready to move at your word. Legitimate security contractors now, but they still know how to handle business.”*

"Keep them on standby. I'm handling this personally," Dante said. "I'm going to walk right into their den and cut the head off the snake."

Before Marcus could argue, Dante hung up the phone. He turned around to find Elena standing in the doorway of the study, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She had heard every word.

"You're going alone," she stated, not a question, but an accusation born of sheer terror. "After everything we've been through, you're just going to walk into a trap?"

"It's not a trap, El, if I'm the one springing it," Dante said softly, stepping toward her.

"And what happens if you don't come back?" Elena's voice broke, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks down her cheeks. "What happens to me and Sophie? You promised me a real life, Dante. You promised me a future. You can't leave us here alone!"

Dante reached out, pulling her violently against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he inhaled her scent, grounding himself in her warmth.

"I am coming back," he whispered fiercely against her ear. "Because I refuse to let anyone take this family away from me again. I'm going to end this nightmare so that we never have to look over our shoulders ever again. Trust me, Elena. One last time."

Elena pulled back just enough to look into his dark, intense eyes. She saw the absolute, unshakable devotion burning within them. Slowly, she nodded, her hand coming up to cup his stubbled cheek.

"Win," she whispered fiercely. "And come back to us."
