Chapter 15 - The Safehouse in the Pines

The snow was falling in thick, blinding sheets by the time the armored SUV pulled off the coastal highway and wound its way deep into the dense pine forests north of Boston. Inside the vehicle, the heater hummed quietly, but the silence between the adults was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Sophie had fallen asleep in the back seat, exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster of Christmas Day, her head resting against a plush velvet pillow. Elena stared out the frosty window, watching the endless sea of dark, towering pines blur past in the headlights.
"Where are we going?" Elena asked without turning her head.
"A hunting lodge near the New Hampshire border," Dante replied, his eyes fixed on the winding, unplowed road ahead, his hands gripping the steering wheel with absolute control. "It’s off the grid. No digital footprint, no public records. My most trusted men secured the perimeter three hours ago. Vance won't find you there."
"And you?" Elena turned to look at him, the harsh dashboard lights casting deep shadows across his sharp features. "You aren't staying with us?"
Dante slowed the vehicle as they approached a heavy iron gate half-hidden by snow-covered brush. He punched a code into a digital keypad mounted on a wooden post, and the gate slowly swung inward.
"I have to go back to the city," Dante said flatly. "If Vance thinks he can rattle a cage and wait for me to cower, I need to show him what happens when the beast wakes up. I’m going to end this tonight."
"Dante, no!" Elena reached across the console, her hand gripping his forearm tightly. "It’s a trap! He’s expecting you to come charging into the city alone. He wants you to react out of anger!"
"He thinks I’m blinded by sentimentality," Dante replied, turning his head to look at her, his dark eyes burning with a cold, terrifying clarity. "He doesn't understand that loving you and Sophie didn't make me weak, Elena. It made me invincible. Every single thing I built, every connection I forged in the underworld—I am going to use it to grind Vance’s empire into dust."
The SUV crunched to a halt in front of a rustic, stone-and-timber lodge nestled deep in the snowy woods. A warm, yellow light glowed from the front porch, where two men in heavy tactical gear stood waiting, their weapons held securely at their sides.
Dante turned off the engine and reached across the seat, gently cupping Elena’s face in his large, calloused hand. His thumb brushed across her cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear she hadn't realized was falling.
"Trust me," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "I will come back to you. I swore an oath on the day I brought you into my home, and I don't break my vows."
Elena pressed her hand over his, closing her eyes as she leaned into his touch. "Be careful, Dante. Please."

He kissed her forehead once, deeply and lingeringly, before opening the door and stepping out into the freezing wind.
