Chapter 16 - The Return to the Inferno

By midnight, the city of Boston was a ghost town, buried beneath a foot of fresh powder. The neon signs of the North End flickered through the swirling blizzard, casting eerie red and green reflections across the icy cobblestones.

A sleek black town car pulled up quietly behind an old brick warehouse near the waterfront—the primary staging ground for Julian Vance’s illegal import operations.

The rear door opened, and Dante Moretti stepped out onto the frozen pavement. He wore a heavy black wool trench coat, his collar turned up against the biting wind. He carried no visible weapons, but the aura of lethal authority that surrounded him was enough to make the two armed sentries standing by the warehouse door freeze in their tracks.

"Moretti," one of the sentries stammered, instinctively reaching for the submachine gun slung across his chest. "You shouldn't be here—"

Before the man’s fingers could wrap around the grip, Dante moved. It was a blur of violence so swift and calculated it defied human reaction. In three rapid steps, Dante closed the distance, struck the guard’s throat with the heel of his palm, and swept his legs out from under him. The second sentry lunged forward, but Dante caught his arm, twisted it behind his back with a sickening crunch of bone, and drove his knee upward into the man's ribs. Both guards hit the frozen ground unconscious before they even realized they were under attack.

Dante didn't break his stride. He reached out, grabbed the heavy iron latch of the warehouse door, and threw it open with a deafening crash that echoed off the brick walls inside.

The cavernous interior of the warehouse was dimly lit by a few flickering overhead bulbs. Standing in the center of the room, leaning casually against a wooden shipping crate with a glass of scotch in his hand, was Julian Vance. Flanking him were half a dozen heavily armed mercenaries, their assault rifles raised and pointed directly at Dante’s chest.

Vance took a slow sip of his drink, a smug, triumphant smile spreading across his scarred face.

"Well, well," Vance drawled, his voice echoing in the hollow space. "The retired king returns to his throne. I must admit, Moretti, I didn't think you had the stomach to walk into the lion's den all by yourself."

Dante stopped ten feet away, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. His face was a mask of absolute, terrifying serenity.

"You made a mistake, Julian," Dante said, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the overhead heaters like a razor. "You brought my family into this."

Vance laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "Family? You think a few weeks playing domestic house with a waitress makes you a family man? You’re a Moretti, Dante. Blood runs through our veins, not sentimentality. And now, you’re going to hand over your shipping routes, sign over your properties, and crawl back into the hole you came from... or I send a team to finish what was left in the woods."

Dante’s eyes narrowed, a dark, dangerous spark flashing in the deep irises. "You think I came here alone to negotiate?"

Vance’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you—"

Before Vance could finish the sentence, every single overhead light in the warehouse clicked off simultaneously, plunging the massive room into pitch-black darkness.
