Chapter 20 - The Whispering Pines

Two days later, the Commonwealth Avenue estate was once again a sanctuary of peace and warmth. The holiday decorations still sparkled in the afternoon sun, casting a festive glow across the hardwood floors where Sophie was busy drawing pictures with her new art set.
Elena stood in the kitchen, organizing the freshly baked pastries for the bakery's reopening the following morning. The door behind her opened softly, and strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her gently against a familiar, solid chest.
Elena leaned her head back against Dante’s shoulder with a deep, contented sigh, turning slightly in his arms.
"Is everything ready for tomorrow?" Dante asked softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
"The inventory is done, the ovens are preheated, and Sophie is asleep upstairs," Elena whispered, smiling as she turned in his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck. "We actually did it, Dante. We have a real life."
Dante smiled, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at her. "I told you, El. Nothing was ever going to take this away from us."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box, holding it out toward her.
Elena’s breath hitched. She slowly took the box, her fingers trembling slightly as she flipped open the lid. Inside lay a simple, elegant platinum band inlaid with a single, flawless diamond that caught the afternoon light.
"Dante..." she whispered, tears welling in her eyes.
"I didn't give you a proper beginning back then," Dante said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a profound, unshakeable devotion. "And I want to make sure the rest of our lives starts the right way. Will you marry me, Elena? For real this time?"
Elena looked up at him, her heart overflowing with a love so deep it drowned out every shadow of her past. She opened her mouth to answer, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face—
*Ring. Ring. Ring.*
The sudden, shrill sound of the vintage rotary telephone in the hallway cut through the quiet room like a knife.
Both of them froze.
Dante’s brow furrowed instantly, his hand dropping from Elena’s waist as his body snapped back into a state of absolute, hyper-vigilant readiness. Secure lines didn't ring unless something catastrophic had happened.

Elena grabbed his arm, her eyes wide with sudden dread. "Dante... who knows this number?"
Slowly, Dante turned his head toward the hallway, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line as the phone continued to ring into the empty, silent house.
