Chapter 22 - Flight Through the Snow

The blizzard outside had intensified, turning the dark Boston woods into a blinding labyrinth of swirling white. The wind shrieked through the pine trees like a pack of starving wolves, matching the frantic rhythm of Elena’s breath as she wrapped Sophie in a thick, down-filled winter coat.

Little Sophie was half-asleep, confused and rubbing her eyes as Elena hoisted her into her arms. "Mommy? Where are we going? It’s the middle of the night..."

"We're going on a little adventure, sweetheart," Elena lied, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. She pressed a desperate kiss to the child's forehead, tasting the cold sweat on her skin. "Just hold onto Mommy very tight, okay? Don't let go."

"I've got her," Dante said, stepping into the bedroom. He wasn't wearing his civilian clothes anymore. Over his dark turtleneck, he wore a heavy tactical vest, and a suppressed semi-automatic pistol was already secured in his shoulder holster. The transformation from the gentle baker to the ruthless syndicate boss was complete, terrifying, and absolute.

In his right hand, he carried a heavy canvas duffel bag filled with encrypted burners, emergency cash, and forged passports—preparations he had sworn he would never need to use again.

"The car?" Elena asked, rushing toward him with Sophie clinging to her neck.

"Front engine is blocked by a drift, but the four-by-four is fueled and ready in the lower barn," Dante said, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter through the frost-covered window. In the distance, cutting through the swirling white curtain of the snowstorm, two faint, amber beams of light flickered between the distant pines.

Headlights. They were already at the property line.

"They're here," Elena breathed, her knees nearly buckling under the weight of the terror threatening to crush her.

"Not for long," Dante growled. He grabbed Elena by the elbow, guiding her swiftly down the back stairs and out through the mudroom into the biting, freezing fury of the night.

The wind hit them like a physical blow. Millions of ice crystals stung their faces, blinding them as they fought their way across the frozen yard toward the wooden barn. Every step felt like walking through wet concrete, the snow piled up to their knees. Sophie buried her face in Elena’s shoulder, crying softly from the cold and the fear.

*Bang.*

The sharp, distinct crack of a silenced gunshot echoed across the clearing, the bullet splintering the wooden post of the porch just inches from where Dante had stood a second earlier.

"Run!" Dante shouted, his arm wrapping firmly around Elena’s waist to propel her forward through the drift.

He didn't hesitate. Pulling his pistol with his free hand, he spun around, dropping to one knee in the snow, and fired three calculated shots back toward the tree line where the amber lights were idling. A muffled curse rang out from the darkness, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on frozen crust.

"Dante, watch out!" Elena screamed, reaching the heavy sliding door of the barn and wrestling it open just enough to squeeze inside with Sophie.

Dante backed into the barn, his eyes never leaving the tree line as he slammed the heavy wooden door shut and threw the massive iron deadbolt into place. The interior of the barn was pitch black, smelling of old hay, motor oil, and leather. The only light came from the pale moon filtering through the high gable windows.

"Get in the truck, El. Floorboards in the back," Dante ordered, running toward the idling silhouette of the black Ford Raptor parked near the stalls.
