Chapter 24 - Sanctuary in the City

The neon lights of Boston glowed through the thick, swirling haze of the blizzard like blurred halos of red and gold. Dawn was breaking, though the sky remained a bruised, heavy slate gray. The city streets were mostly deserted, buried under a thick blanket of holiday snow, save for the occasional snowplow crawling down major avenues with amber warning beacons flashing.

The Ford Raptor tore down a quiet side street in the historic North End, its tires spraying slush against the brick storefronts before sliding smoothly into the subterranean parking garage of an nondescript, high-security apartment building.

Dante killed the engine. The sudden silence inside the cab was deafening.

He exhaled a long, shaky breath, letting go of the steering wheel, and immediately turned around to check on Elena and Sophie. Sophie had finally fallen back asleep from sheer exhaustion, her small face pale against Elena’s shoulder. Elena looked up at Dante, her eyes ringed with dark circles, her lips chapped from the cold, but her expression steady.

"Are we safe?" she asked quietly, her voice barely a whisper.

"For now," Dante replied, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "This place is tied to a corporate shell company managed by my old attorney. No one from Moretti’s faction knows it exists. The perimeter is monitored by silent thermal cameras."

He got out of the truck, opened the rear door, and gently lifted Sophie into his arms, being careful not to wake her. Elena slid out after them, her legs trembling slightly from the adrenaline crash. Dante wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side as they took the private elevator straight up to the penthouse suite.

The penthouse was vast, minimalist, and warm, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the snow-draped harbor. But Elena didn't care about the luxury. The moment Dante set Sophie down on a plush sofa in the master bedroom and covered her with a warm cashmere throw, Elena collapsed into an armchair, covering her face with her hands as the full weight of the night finally caught up with her.

Dante knelt before her, pulling her hands away from her face and holding them tightly in his own warm palms.

"El. Look at me," he commanded gently.

She raised her eyes, swimming with unshed tears. "It never ends, Dante. Does it? Every time we think we're free, the past comes back to drag us down. We can't keep running forever."

Dante looked deep into her eyes, his expression a mixture of profound sorrow and unyielding determination. "We aren't running anymore, Elena. Last night proved something to me. As long as Moretti's ghosts are out there, breathing the same air as us, we will never have peace. Hiding is no longer an option."

"What are you saying?" Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat. "You're going back to war?"

May you like

"No," Dante replied, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I'm going to finish it. Once and for all."
