Chapter 28 - The Final Ledger

Midnight struck across Boston, the deep, solemn bells of Old North Church ringing out across the frozen harbor.

Inside the high-security penthouse, the apartment was warm and bathed in the soft, golden glow of Christmas lights still twinkling on the tree. Sophie was fast asleep in her own bed upstairs, dreaming of sugarplums and snowflakes.

Elena sat at the kitchen island, staring intently out the floor-to-ceiling window at the quiet harbor below. A cup of untouched chamomile tea sat steaming between her hands. Every second that ticked by felt like an eternity. She had agreed to let him go, but the silence of the night was deafening.

The private elevator chime chimed softly.

Elena’s head snapped toward the entryway. Her breath caught in her throat. She stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor.

The elevator doors slid open.

Dante stepped into the penthouse. His trench coat was dusted with fresh snow, and there was a faint smear of soot on his cheek, but he was walking upright, his shoulders relaxed, his dark eyes shining with a light Elena had never seen in them before. The heavy, oppressive aura of danger that had clung to him like a second skin for years was completely, miraculously gone.

"Dante..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking as tears welled in her eyes.

He didn't say a word. He closed the distance between them in three long strides, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist and burying his face in the crook of his neck. Elena gasped, throwing her arms around his shoulders and pulling him as close as humanly possible, soaking in his warmth, his scent, and the undeniable reality of his presence.

"It's over, El," Dante murmured against her hair, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s really over."

Elena pulled back, her hands trembling as she touched his face, tracing the clean lines of his jaw. "What happened? Are they...?"

"They're gone," Dante said softly, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across his face for the first time in their lives. "The ledgers have been handed over. The remnants have scattered to the winds. No one is coming for us anymore. We are finally, truly free."

Elena let out a sob of pure, unadulterated relief, burying her face against his chest as the tears flowed freely—not of fear or sorrow this time, but of a joy so profound it felt like a dream.

Dante held her tightly, looking up toward the ceiling where little Sophie was sleeping peacefully, before looking back down at the woman who had brought light into his dark, frozen world on a snowy Christmas Eve in Boston.
